Electricity from renewable energy sources has reached maturity in terms of volume, forecasting certainty, cost competitiveness, players in the market, and risk perception. On 17 August 2020, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has approved the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) proposal for opening the Green Term Ahead Market (G-TAM).  This is a step towards renewables deployment in market mode.  Proposal for opening a Green Day Ahead Market (G-DAM) window is also under active consideration
Opening up a separate renewable power trading window in exchanges is expected to enhance visibility and also create an organized competition for electricity from renewable energy sources. The markets would allow for the discovery of the true perceived price of renewables including the attribution for RPO compliance.
Renewable power trade in exchanges will also help corporates and other bulk buyers in meeting their voluntary commitments for increasing consumption of renewable power in their operations. This could also see the emergence of innovative business models for generators and buyers beyond long-term PPAs.
In the above background, the Session aims to facilitate the exchange of updates and suggest ways to address challenges in ways of increasing the share of electricity from renewable energy sources traded in exchanges.

Discussion points

  • How much and in what manner can power from existing and upcoming renewable power projects can be made available for trading on markets?
  • What are the technical and regulatory challenges in achieving volumes of short-term green power trading in India?
  • What initial policy interventions will be required to encourage the trading of green power
