Renewables are gradually becoming the cornerstone of the global energy system, witnessing technology, and cost disruptions at unprecedented scales. Growing penetration of renewables largely depends upon materials, technologies, and policies that support the large-scale expansion and enable energy systems to successfully integrate larger shares of renewables.

In the recent past, innovations including next-generation solar cells, energy storage, hydrogen and fuel cells, and flexible electricity grid have shown tremendous promise. Rapid developments in technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, 3-D printing, and Blockchain also seem likely to drive significant transformations of the energy systems. Other emerging innovations that are yet to get out of laboratories but could also significantly influence the shape of renewables in 2030 and beyond.

In synergy with the global developments, India has undertaken planning for the next generation energy systems dominated by renewables, and efforts are towards creating partnerships for acquisition, diffusion, and indigenization & absorption of knowledge, technology, and skills by local actors in India.
The session aims to facilitate the exchange of updates on emerging global trends and insights for developing a strategy for India.

Key Discussion Points

  • What is the future of renewable energy? How are technologies, policies, and markets likely to evolve over the coming decades?
  • What are the expected challenges and opportunities as the share of renewables continues to expand?
  • What are the big technology disruptions with the potential to transform the renewable energy landscape? How does India prepare for such disruptions?
  • Is it possible to envision a carbon-neutral economy driven completely by renewables? How can it be achieved?
